Did you know that, between 2010 and 2019, Hispanics* accounted for more than half (52%) of the U.S. population growth, reaching a record 60.6 million people or 18% of the population? Not surprisingly, the number of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)—where the full-time undergraduate student body is at least 25% Hispanic—also rapidly grew, from 293 in 2010 to 559 for the 2020-2021 academic year.
Established by Congress 30 years ago, an HSI designation ensures that federal appropriations are available to historically underfunded institutions. At edX, we work closely with all of our HSI and “emerging HSI” (eHSI) partners to increase educational access, affordability, and opportunity for learners of all kinds, including Latinx* individuals. These partners range from several public institutions across the greater University of California (UC) and University of Texas (UT) systems to MIT, NYU, Pepperdine, and Rice. The relationships we’ve cultivated with each of these partners are indispensable to our steadfast commitment to opening up new doors to opportunity for everyone, everywhere.
To generate more awareness for these vital institutions, we’re shining a spotlight on a sampling of edX programs and courses created by some of our HSI and eHSI partners. They’re a great example of our commitment in action, representing learning pathways from free to degree that provide learners with many flexible entry points to high-quality education at any age or stage of their lives.
As we embrace and celebrate the world’s ever-expanding diversity of cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, edX is eager to continue growing these important partnerships—to help close skills and knowledge gaps, create more equitable opportunities in education, and support the Latinx community and all learners in unlocking their full potential.
