edX Launches Global Initiative to Help Universities Address ‘New Normal’ of Fully Remote Teaching and Learning

edX creates series of online events and course catalog, offered for free, to support academic community during COVID-19 pandemic

Cambridge, MA - Today, edX, the trusted platform for online learning, announced a global initiative to help universities facing the challenge of implementing effective online teaching and learning.

By offering access to expertise and content for free, edX is helping universities create a plan for the upcoming semester, when a vast majority of campuses are likely to be closed or partially closed. The initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic from universities was to quickly address the move to remote teaching, but now is the time of critical preparation to put in place more long term, strategic solutions. edX is committed to helping schools and colleges in need of support during this time. Teaching and learning online is part of our DNA. edX and our partner institutions have spent the past eight years developing expertise in how to deliver impactful learning experiences fully online. We want to share this expertise, for free, with the global academic community. edX is proud to announce the first in a series of global events, a webinar on how to teach online for absolute beginners, designed to help universities make this transition effectively and efficiently.

This series will address the topics that are top of mind for educators as they face the challenge of rethinking how they deliver their classes in an online environment, whether in colleges or in high schools. Another key challenge universities are facing is around courses. It is nearly impossible for schools to bring all the courses necessary for their students to continue learning online in time for the upcoming semesters. edX launched Online Campus, an initiative that offers free access to a catalog of courses and programs on edX.org, to address this need and help universities around the world to complete the academic year remotely.

In the initial weeks of the pandemic, edX was quick to launch an early version of edX Online Campus to help our university partners best support their students, and to create new resources for learners and partners alike. Since then, it has become clear that there is no ‘going back to normal’ for many universities in the near future. This latest announcement addresses the long-term expected impact of COVID-19.
